This week on the PTS, we are running a limited test of some new, dungeon boss-themed Outfit Styles. Every few days, the Outfit Styles for a different dungeon’s Mask and Shoulders will drop in game, and a dungeon-inspired pack of weapon Outfit Styles will be featured in the Crown Store.
Completing the featured dungeon has a chance to drop the Mask Outfit Style associated with that dungeon, while the Undaunted reward chest associated with the featured dungeon has a chance to drop the Shoulder Outfit Style for that dungeon. If you’ve completed the hard mode achievement for that dungeon, you are more likely to find Mask and Shoulder Outfit Styles.

  • Adjusted the contents of Champion’s Caches that were obtained prior to Summerset, but which have not yet been opened. This does not impact any Champion’s Caches that will be obtained after the release of Summerset.
  • Clarified the tooltip on the Waxed Jeweler’s Parcel, which can occasionally be found inside Gladiator’s Rucksacks.
  • Increased the health provided by the Triune jewelry so that it provides 10% more Health than Magicka and Stamina. This is not yet represented by the tooltip, which will be updated in the next PTS build.
  • Your camera will no longer clip after dismounting while moving.

  • Feedback received on the new Outfit Style, the Skyforge Smith Hammer (obtainable by completing the Grand Master Crafter achievement), sparked some inspiration in us. We've added a lightning effect to this hammer's visuals.
  • The following Motifs will now contribute to your chance to acquire Master Writs:

    • Bloodforge
    • Dreadhorn
    • Ebonshadow
    • Fang Lair
    • Scalecaller
    • Worm Cult
  • Adjusted the alchemical traits on Clam Gall and Powdered Mother of Pearl to avoid certain trait combinations that led to undesirable behavior.
  • Fixed an issue where the character model would disappear when using a Race or Appearance Change Token.
  • The spawn-in animation for Cinder and Frostbane wolves is now smoother.
  • Fixed an issue that was preventing you from claiming some rewards from the Level-Up Advisor.
  • Updated the furnishing plan drop chances within Vvardenfell, Clockwork City, and Summerset. When you loot a furnishing plan in these areas, you are now much more likely to see furnishing plans directly associated with that area.
  • Adjusted the size categorization of several new furnishings.
  • Fixed an issue where the appearances of "Tree, Young Poplar" and "Tree, Twin Poplar" were swapped.
  • Corrected the tooltip for the "Redguard Sofa, Desert Flame" to include the "Sittable" tag.

  • Corrected a long-standing issue where, when placing items, visual effects for those items would not move smoothly with the item.
    • Note that certain effects like flames or smoke build up over time, and will still appear to trail behind a bit.
  • Updated the “Anthology of Available Abodes” book to more accurately represent real estate opportunities across Tamriel.
  • Made minor changes to the Daily Rewards screen and iconography.
  • Exposed overrideRank to APIs for addons: GetAbilityDescription(), GetAbilityCost(), GetAbilityDuration(), GetAbilityCastInfo(), GetAbilityRange(), GetAbilityRadius(), GetAbilityTargetDescription()
  • Fixed an issue where the Convert to Imperial/Morag Tong actions were appearing for jewelry.

So I wrote up some fake Grimoire Cards for fun!

So I’ve decided to write up some fake Grimoire Cards to flesh things out a bit. I hope you get some enjoyment out of them. They’re just for fun. Please let me know what you think!
Before you read there are a few things you should know:
• From the perspective of these cards, the vast majority of Guardians can’t remember anything about their life before being re-forged in Light and becoming Guardians. There are some, however, who remember bits and pieces and just a few who remember everything.
• Traveler’s Tales is a magazine I made up. It’s an independent publication in the Last City and serves as a combination news/entertainment magazine. These cards come from an interview they were granted. The interview takes place in the Tower, roughly during the time we’re playing the game. I picked this name for the magazine because it felt right and partly because it’s alliterative and alliteration is awesome. I also kind of picked it because it’s a game dev, which I thought would be a nice sort of nod to others in the games industry. I don’t work for TT Games or anything like that; I just thought it would be a nice sort of “inside reference.”
Card 1: The Collapse
Excerpt from “Living History: an Interview with ‘The First Guardian,’” published in Traveler’s Tales Issues 1025 through 1032
I don’t remember the heat.
I know that it was hot that day, and I remember that it was hot, but I can’t actually recall experiencing the heat. I don’t remember sweating, or feeling the sun, or anything else that comes with the idea of warm weather. Just that it was hot, like a universal truth. Like “gravity exists” or “there is air here,” as something that you just explicitly know without realizing.
I remember how the Baron looked. I remember how BIG he was: it intimidated me a little bit. I hadn’t been expecting him to be so large, so strong. I remember the glass roofs of the station, and the Fallen ships above. I remember the trains, and the endless commuter traffic going on just outside our little impromptu screens, shielding us from the public. I remember the people I had already branded in my head as “tourists,” although they were really more like sightseers, come to gawk up at the alien crafts above and, if they were lucky, at the occupants which had descended to meet us.
I had never believed it, of course. Their laughably obvious diplomatic overtures. Their stumbling, bumbling attempts to appear as anything other than an attacking military. Yet somehow, they had conned the leadership into letting them land and hold a diplomatic parley in a public place. At least I had convinced them to increase the size of their guard contingent.
It still astounded me that I had risen to my position, and at such a young age: the second in command in the foremost guard unit for humanity’s leaders and, now, serving in this event as the field commander while our leader remained in his headquarters. Part of the reason for my rapid rise was, of course, the sudden deaths of most of this unit in two small disasters on Mars and Venus. While most saw them as tragedies, I saw them as convenient. Too convenient. And the fact that it happened to coincide with the arrival of this new species, well…as I like to say: once is an anomaly, twice is a coincidence, and three times…well I hoped there wouldn’t be a third time.
Despite my skepticism and the warnings from security experts here I stood, with some envoys and some actual Galactic Leaders, as they met with a Baron from this new Species, which humanity had tentatively translated as “Eliksni.” This day would go down in history, everybody knew it. The only question was how. I didn’t think it would be a happy moment, but, as the politicians were so fond of pointing out, “It’s your job to see evil and malice everywhere, even where there is none. That’s how you keep us safe.”
“Of course,” I had thought to myself, careful not to speak my mind, “if you don’t let us act on those dark predictions, we may as well be unemployed.”
I took a quick glance over at my mother, sitting on her bench and observing the proceedings from among the group of reporters and special guests. One of the politicians, in a fit of generosity, had insisted the security team’s field commander bring a special guest, and since my friends all also worked in the military or in other Guard Units, (as in the case of Cal, who was my most trusted friend and also already here in my unit,) I had decided to bring my mother. I’d been reluctant at first, as sure as I was that this day would end in violence, but I remember how my anxiety melted away as I looked at her face, filled with wonder at witnessing this strange new page in human history.
I don’t know now whether I regret it or not.
I looked from her, to Cal standing next to her (“Take care of her, Cal.” I’d asked him,) and back to the Fallen Baron, just as his voice rose and grew and became loud, and his stumbling English broke down into his native tongue. I moved, no time to draw my gun, and dove straight for him as he used one of his hands to manipulate some kind of communication device and rose his two upper arms to the skies, and the Collapse began.
Card 2: The First Guardian
Excerpt from “Living History: an Interview with ‘The First Guardian,’” published in Traveler’s Tales Issues 1025 through 1032
“So why do you think they call you ‘The First Guardian?’ You weren’t the first one forged by a Ghost.”
No, I wasn’t. But I fought the Darkness when I was still human. Still just a normal human. I mean, there were lots of people who fought, during the Collapse, but I ended up with a story attached to me, somehow, and it got told and repeated and spread, and by the time I was re-forged everyone knew the story of “The First Guardian,” the man who stood against the Fallen Baron in the first moments of the Collapse.
“Of course. The man who stood against the Darkness. Who inspired all the others.” He looks down and exhales, as if in disagreement with my words.
I don’t know about that. But why did you ask? You already know the story. You know where the title comes from.
“Well I know what the stories say. But I want to know what you think.” A pause. “You don’t think you did anything great?” He waits a moment before answering.
I just did what I did. What I had to do; the only thing I could think to do. It wasn’t like I saw some great destiny laid out before me, or some unfathomably large decision. I didn’t see anything! I just acted. Hell, I didn’t even really do anything. Mostly I just fought until I got killed.
“Ok, then, sure. But you were there, at the Collapse, when it began, and you fought. Don’t you think that’s important?”
Important? Sure. But lots of people fought, and lots of people died. I didn’t do anything special.
I laugh. “You stood against a Fallen Baron! As a human! You can’t pretend that isn’t special!
Well, no, not really. I didn’t even kill him. I just got dead. Just because people saw me fight doesn’t make me any more special than the people who fought but nobody saw or told stories about.
He seems to be getting slightly annoyed now. “But you did punch the Baron in the face?”
Well, yeah, but…
I can tell he’s going to protest again, or qualify, so I decide to head him off. “Why don’t you just tell me what you did, and we’ll publish your words just as they are. No commentary, and no judgment. Just the words.” He thinks on this for a bit.
…Ok. Sure. I’ll tell you about the Collapse. About what I saw, and what I did.
But first you have to understand that nowadays people talk about the Collapse as if it began on the edges of the Solar System and worked inward, like a virus or a tide. But it didn’t. It began on Earth.
Ok, I’ll admit: most people use “The Collapse” to refer to the entire length of time it took for humanity to be reduced from its Golden Age glory to what it is now, and that’s fair. It’s really more accurate to call it a time period, rather than any one event. That said, when people refer to a specific event as the beginning of the Collapse, they usually choose the appearance of the Fallen at the edge of the Solar System. While they’re not necessarily wrong, I believe this was only the prologue. The set-up, if you will. The real event or spark that set everything off was the Fallen attack on the train station in what was once Berlin. When they attempted to wipe out a chunk of humanity’s leaders in one single blow, and begin slaughtering us. You know about that?
“Of course. It’s basic history. We all do.”
Well I was there. I remember it.
He takes a deep breath, as if steeling himself. Perhaps, after all this time, delving so far into memory really takes some effort?
Let me tell you what I remember.
I remember thinking some crazy things as I fought with that Baron. I never believed their overtures of peace from the first. They had no reason to like us, or to treat us well. We had the Traveler: while it had once graced them with its presence and gifts, it now blessed us, and they were jealous and spiteful. The leaders were all too eager to accept the Fallen’s story, which amounted to: “Oh we miss the Light of the Traveler so much please share it with us and let us join together and march forward into a new bright future…” blah blah blah. It was all lies, and it sounded like it. They put me in mind, not of a jealous older sibling as some historians call them, who wanted its toys and attention and happiness back, but as a junky. Or rather, as the stereotype of the junky, who, having become hopelessly addicted, now went to the dealer or to whoever they could find who had their “stuff,” and would say or do anything to get it. Despite their promises of “C’mon man I just want you to share.” They really harbored violent intentions. Somehow, in receiving the Traveler’s blessing, we had become villains in their minds. Even if we had agreed to anything they wanted, we were already evil simply by virtue of having what they wanted. Whether we gave it back or not was irrelevant: if we didn’t they’d attack us to take it, and if we did they’d attack us out of spite and vengeance.
With The Fallen, though, there was the added presence of jealousy mixed into the hatred and rage. It would have stopped them from ever truly becoming friendly to us. They chafed under the idea that the Traveler had abandoned their people and chosen us instead. They hated us for it. I’m sure some of them believed that if we were made extinct, the Traveler would return to them.
His ghost, which has been floating behind his shoulder, zooms a little closer and rotates to face him. Its parts move a little as he looks to it; they seem to be communicating.
I’m sorry; I’ve been rambling. My Ghost has just reminded me that I said I would tell you what I remember, so here it is:
I remember tackling the Baron as he tried to set their plan in motion. That sounds ludicrous even now: tackling a Baron? Insanity. But at the time it was all I could do.
I remember him pushing me off him almost effortlessly, with only one of his arms, and flinging me across the floor. I remember the shooting, both bullets and some new unfamiliar sound from the Fallen weapons. The Baron had come armed only with his swords (they had insisted they were ceremonial) but his contingent of dregs and the vandal had come armed. After all, if we were allowed to bring armed guards, wasn’t he?
I remember drawing my pistol to shoot the Baron. I remember him vanishing in a swirl of light and wind. I remember a beam of light coming from a ship above, falling through a gap in the glass roof. I remember a few Fallen moving towards it, but being cut down by gunfire. I remember shooting the other Fallen. I remember the leaders, press, and guests being ushered out of the station. I remember the panic and the screaming as the multitudes of civilians fled.
I remember my gun clicking, empty what felt like far too soon, as the Baron re-materialized a short distance away, swords drawn. I remember diving for the dropped pistol from a dead fellow guard. I remember shooting from the floor, trying to fire as many rounds as quickly as I could at the Baron. At the time, of course, I didn’t know anything about Fallen physiology, and I was just aiming for center mass but by some stroke of luck or fate the Baron relinquished his swords. Perhaps I crippled those two arms, or his hands or fingers. Perhaps he chose to engage me unarmed, out of some sense of arrogance or honor or spite. I’ve long since stopped asking.
As the swords clattered to the ground, he charged me. I remember my scream of rage and my desperate lunge as I picked myself up off the floor to meet him head-on. I distinctly remember punching him in the face, although I have no idea how effective it was.
I remember fighting with him, actually holding my own for what felt like lifetimes: actually fighting and getting hits in. I remember the power I felt: the righteous, desperate, hatred for this monster, this creature, this thing that had brought about our ruin.
Somehow, even then, I knew, knew, that this was the end. It was our downfall. I’m not really sure how I knew this or some of the other things I felt or knew during this fight. I’ve asked my Ghost about it, but we can’t come up with an answer. Maybe my interactions with the Vex have done something to my time or my memory, and that is why I knew the future at that moment. Maybe it was something to do with the Traveler. Maybe it was just my own wishful thinking. Maybe I’m just projecting my current knowledge onto my memories. We don’t know.
I remember the Baron, finally, hitting me across the body with his left lower arm, breaking a good number of the bones in my front and sending me flying through the air to impact on a wall, which broke most of the bones in my back. As I slid to the ground I saw:
The Baron, obviously hurt (oh how proud I felt!) lumbering towards me to finish me off.
Cal, pulling my mother away as she tried to run to me, fear etched on every line of her face. (He told her I was lost, and he was right. My death was certain. I’m glad he pulled her away. He saved her life. He kept his promise to take care of her. I’ll never forget that, and I’ll never repay him.)
I saw the police, arriving remarkably quickly with heavy SWAT units, and beginning to put down a withering fire on the remaining Fallen from the diplomatic envoy.
I remember the ships opening fire on the crowds below, causing great explosions which killed many in the panicked throng.
I remember the Baron, as his ships opened fire, looking skyward and screaming, in what I was sure was anger, at his small fleet.
I remember him walking forward, to finish me off.
As he walked, I became aware of several more things, with certainty: that my mother was safe and that Cal would keep his promise. That my tackle and our security force had foiled some great Fallen plan. That our defense had saved many, many lives. This last one made me smile. As I’ve said, I have no idea how I knew these things which turned out to be true, but I don’t think it matters how I knew them. Just that I did.
As the Baron closed in, I smiled up at him. Somehow, despite my broken body, I felt no pain and found new strength. Some say now that this was the Traveler’s Light, as it recognized and empowered its first Guardian. I belong to the group who believes it was just adrenaline, as my body died, pushing me on in an evolutionary frenzy with its last desperate burst of life. I’m not really sure, though.
But for whatever reason, I was able to reach up, as the Baron attempted to lay its hands on me and crush me into nothingness, and land one last great blow upon his face. It destroyed my hand, I felt it, but again I felt no pain. It didn’t really do any damage, but the impact saw the Baron stagger back a half a step. Perhaps there really was some of the Traveler’s light in me, or maybe he just staggered back out of shock. The Baron looked at me again, anger the only thing left on his face. With a roar of hatred he lifted his two upper arms, fists clenched, and brought them down on me, and I saw no more.
Card 3: The First Guardians
Excerpt from “Living History: an Interview with ‘The First Guardian,’” published in Traveler’s Tales Issues 1025 through 1032
Oh, my re-forging? There’s no story there. It’s just like everyone else’s. They get re-forged in Light by a ghost, they find their way to other Guardians, and they begin fighting. There’s nothing to tell.
“Really? Nothing?”
Nope. Nothing interesting. If you want thrilling tales of Guardians fighting their way to the Last City through overwhelming Darkness, there are plenty of other Guardians to ask. I’m not one of them.
”Ok, what about the early years? When you arrived? Things were very different, no? The Last City wasn’t even a city yet.”
Yeah, I could tell you about that, if you like.
Well, as you probably already know from your history studies, the City wasn’t always a City. Once it was just one of many settlements. It quickly became the largest, though, what with its position beneath the traveler and the presence of the First Guardians.
“Actually I’m not really clear on that. Didn’t the Guardians found The City?”
Well, yes, but you have to understand, after the moment the Traveler died and gave birth to the ghosts, there was a decent stretch of time where the Guardians, or what few of them the Ghosts had already found, were just picking themselves up and dusting themselves off. It took some time before they unified into the force they are now. In the meantime the survivors made settlements all over. At what would become the City, there was a group, essentially an army, who had sort of founded a small city, with a government and a military. The Guardians flocked to this largest of settlements and worked with the groups there to build what is now The Last City.
“Okay, so what about The First Guardians?”
Well they were the military arm of that group. Protecting the settlement before and after the Guardians came along.
“And they were inspired by you, right? By The First Guardian?”
Well, I don’t know about that.
“But you knew them, right? Some of them?”
Sure. They had lived through the Collapse, so I knew them. Hell, Cal was one of their top leaders. Remember, I mentioned him? Cal was at the Station. He took care of my mom after I died.
“Yes, I remember. Were there others you knew? And was your mother there too?”
I knew about a third of the First Guardians from before the Collapse. They remembered me, and I remembered them. They were astounded when I arrived, dead as I had been, and surprised that I was a Guardian, but glad to see me. I was glad to see them too.
“…And your mother?”
Well, it had been a long time since my death. Cal was much older. He told me my mother had made it to their settlement, and helped start it. Sort of like a community organizer, helping families. He said she lived out the rest of her days helping others, before dying of old age, and that she never forgot me, and…that she was………very proud.
His last two words are so quiet I almost miss them, and he looks away. I excuse myself to get some water. When I return he seems perfectly composed.
“So, The First Guardians are the people who worked to protect the settlement that became The Last City, but weren’t Guardians?”
Correct. And like I said I knew some of them from before the Collapse. They served well. Some even managed to live long enough to die of old age. I know I was glad to see them again, and give them my thanks. Cal in particular.
“To give them your dying words in person, huh?” I ask with a smile.
Yeah. It was nice to get closure there. Thanking them for all their work and everything, and Cal for taking care of my mom. Although I never got to say goodbye to him…
“What happened?”
He died at the Battle of Six Fronts. He was on a different front than I was. I didn’t see it, but I saw his body afterward.
Sensing another sensitive topic, I decide to change tack: “So after they all died or retired, then it was just Guardians?”
No, actually. There were small but significant numbers of Non-Guardians who continued to volunteer and serve with us for a while. Kids who had been born in the City while the other First Guardians served grew up looking up to them, and aspired to be like them. The numbers dwindled, though, and eventually that stopped. Now it’s just Guardians.
Card 4: The First Guardians II

“So they’re not calling them ‘The First Guardians’ anymore?”
No. They’re calling them “Rogues.” All the new documents say that. And lots of Guardians are saying it too. They don’t even get to be “Protectors,” or anything, just “Rogues.” It’s a disgrace. They should be ashamed for discrediting The First Guardians like that. They served just like we do. At least I stopped them from changing all the old documents. Anything from before will still say “The First Guardians.” I had to argue on historical grounds, about the immorality of altering old records, because their vocabulary choices hold bearing on their history. Can you believe that? At least the Cryptarchy supported me, if only on “historical preservation” grounds…
Much of this is a bit over my head, so I focus on something else: “Did the Guardians get along with the First Guardians?”
Some of them did. The original First Guardians, who were already there when the first Guardians showed up, were well respected, but as time went on, most of the Guardians began to resent them, at least a little bit. They saw Guardians as having the responsibility to ensure the existence of the city, and non-Guardians as having the responsibility of rebuilding, so they saw the First Guardians as shirking their duty. Most Guardians were too polite to say anything though, and they recognized the sacrifice the First Guardians were making, with only one life to live. Those of us who remember our past lives always appreciated the First Guardians though, probably because we remember what it was like to be one of them.
Some Guardians, however were openly opposed. They kept mostly quiet when the Vanguard was made up of half First Guardians, but once the numbers dwindled they became more vocal.
“And now?”
Well they’re calling them “Rogues” now, aren’t they? They took away the honor in their name. It’s a memory problem really. Lots of the Guardians who worked with First Guardians are gone now, but when I knelt by Cal’s broken body after Six Fronts, the other Guardians were respectful, and joined in my grief, and when they held their memorial services for those who died, the First Guardians were included. But there aren’t so many who remember now. They think of the First Guardians as upstarts, or footnotes. Incidental. But those of us who remember…well, we still call them First Guardians.
Card 5: Kathar I

“Was it a big problem? Disharmony between the Guardians and the First Guardians?”
Well, not during combat if that’s what you mean. Other times. It was more a general attitude problem than anything more concrete.
“What do you mean?”
Hmmmm…let me tell you about Kathar.
He was forged right around when I was, but he hated the First Guardians. Openly. I remember a patrol on the moon, with me, Kathar, Melkon, and Uthal. Uthal was a First Guardian, and I’d known him from before the Collpase. We got ambushed by some Fallen, and pinned down by a decently-sized group. As we were slowly picking them off, a sniper none of us had seen hit Uthal. The shot went right through him. I dropped down to help him while Kathar and Melkon continued to fight.
Uthal looked a mess; there was a hole clean through where his left lung should have been, and he was struggling to speak as blood and some indeterminate organ-mush slid out of the hole. His other lung was filling with blood. There wasn’t much I could do, but I was trying, and as I was, he kept trying to speak, instead just gurgling incoherently. Finally, he reached up and grabbed me by the helmet, pushing my head to the other side, looking away from where we had been shooting, just in time to see a Fallen skiff unloading another huge group of Fallen, and its turrets opening up on us. I shouted for Melkon and he put up his Ward just in time to block the skiff’s attack.
We were able to fight off the Fallen, but Uthal died. His last act, other than smearing his blood all over my helmet, was to save our lives. To warn us of the Fallen behind us. And as I knelt there on my knees by his body, Kathar looked down, and with the most disgust I’ve ever heard in someone’s voice said “What a fool. What a waste.”
If I hadn’t been kneeling I surely would have punched him, but Melkon was faster. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, quietly, “He saved our lives. And there are still Fallen crawling all over this place. We should keep moving. We can talk later.”
Kathar and I both probably had things to say, but Melkon was right. We let it go.
Card 6: Kathar II
Excerpt from “Living History: an Interview with ‘The First Guardian,’” published in Traveler’s Tales Issues 1025 through 1032
Hm? Oh, yeah, Kathar’s still around. Still fighting. Actually we get along quite well now. After Verdan.
“Verdan? Is that a what or a who? Or a where?”
It’s a who. He was one of the ones born in the city, who grew up to volunteer as a First Guardian. He wasn’t around before the Collapse, but signed on with us anyway, while First Guardians were on their way out. He was one of the last.
Verdan always carried around a baseball glove…you know what those are?
I nod. It seems a strange question.
Yeah well, it had his name written on it in black marker, and he said it had been a gift from his father, before he died. Verdan lost both his parents at a young age. Maybe that’s why he signed up with us? Anyway, Kathar hated Verdan just like he hated all the First Guardians, until one day on Mars.
We still weren’t terribly experienced with the Cabal, you see. The Fallen are smaller groups, strikers, hit and run. The Vex…well they don’t really seem to fit into any category. The Hive hadn’t arrived yet. But the Cabal…they are a big, traditional military that uses true military tactics and overwhelming force. We weren’t used to that. We made lots of mistakes when they first showed up.
This patrol had been me, Kathar, four other Guardians, and Verdan. Seven of us in total, sent to gather information and reconnaissance. We ended up sitting right in the path of one of their patrols, and they responded with everything they had. On the way back to our ships, they dropped a tank in front of us, and we were separated. Kathar, me, and Verdan, who had been riding on the back of my Sparrow, ended up stuck on foot holed up in a building under siege by a huge onslaught of Cabal. The others made it back to their ships. We were under orders at that point to just go, and let everyone fend for themselves if separated. One Guardian making it back with some information was preferable to everybody dying trying to retrieve their comrades, the Vanguard said.
So we were on our own, and it very quickly became clear that the sheer amount of firepower present meant that we couldn’t escape together. Someone would have to stay behind and hold them at the building while the other two escaped. Even for a Guardian, this would mean certain death. Surrounded by Cabal and with no comrades to help, there would be no resurrection.
I had a whole speech planned on why it should be me, but I never even got to use it. When I looked over to where Verdan and Kathar were hunched at their window, and opened my mouth to speak, Verdan said “Give me your machine guns.” I tried to protest but Verdan ignored me. As Kathar handed over his gun he asked “Are you sure?”
“Yes,” Verdan said. “Someone has to die here, and it should be me. You two can do so much more, with your powers, and your resurrection. With all that power you can do great things. It would be a shame if one of you had to die here. Me, on the other hand, I can only die once. If I live on I won’t do much more than I’ve already done, but you two…you can do so much more.”
He looked at me: “So, give me your machine gun.”
I looked at Kathar, who only nodded. I was still ready to protest, especially since I had lived the longest of anyone here, even if you don’t count that I can remember my first life. Verdan wasn’t even forty yet. He can’t even have been thirty-five. As I opened my mouth Verdan cut me off again: “I’m not going to ask again. Give. Me. Your. Machine gun.”
I looked at him, then at Kathar. I knew he was right, that the power of a Guardian was better saved for greater problems, but I didn’t want to admit it. Then a Cabal ship swooped above us and rained explosives down on the building. As rubble from the upper floors rained down past our windows, I knew there was no time to argue.
I slid my machine gun over the ground to them, and Verdan turned to Kathar. “Just do one thing for me,” he took his baseball glove and pressed it into Kathar’s hands, “don’t let them get their filthy hands on this. It belongs with us, with our people, and no one else.”
Kathar only nodded, then stood up, grabbed me, and half pulled half guided me to the exit. We waited on the first floor until we heard the machine guns open up, the stole out and slipped away. The Cabal ignored us, probably because they were rightfully more concerned with the hail of bullets coming from where they thought three enemy combatants were still holed up.
When we made it to the top of the first hill, the ship came back. It dropped more bombs, and, as the entire building collapsed, the machine guns fell silent.
Back at the tower, after I finished my debriefing, I had lost track of Kathar.
The next morning we got another mission, the same six from our patrol gone wrong. Kathar wasn’t in the hangar, so I went to look for him. I found him, helmet off, standing at a ledge alone looking out over the City, with Verdan’s glove in his hands.
“Kathar, we’ve got a mission. We’re going back to Mars.”
He didn’t answer; just studied the glove in his hands for a bit, fingers tracing over Verdan’s name, the marker slightly faded with time. Finally he looked up at me and said: “He called this a Baseball Glove, right?”
“What does that mean?” Kathar is one of the many who doesn’t remember his first life.
I told him: “Baseball was a sport. I guess it still is, if he had that. They must still play it in the City. The glove was for catching the ball.”
Kathar was quiet again, rotating the glove in his hands. Then: “You remember your life. Do you know how to play?”
“Yeah. I mean, I know the rules. I was never very good at it, though.”
Kathar looked over at me, then, and I have never seen more in a man’s face than I did in that moment. “Will you teach me?” He said.
I looked at Kathar’s face, and at the glove in his hands, and out at the city, and back at his face, and finally said. “Yeah. I’d be glad to.”
He nodded and looked back at the glove, and I closed the remaining distance to him. “But not now. For now, we’ve got work to do.”
Kathar secured the glove to his belt and put on his helmet before turning to me: “Yes. We do have things to do. Great things.” He followed me back to the hangar, and off we went.
That glove still hangs on Kathar’s belt to this day.
In case things weren’t clear, here’s some more context from my head, both for clarification and just some of my random thoughts:
• In these cards, Guardians essentially live forever unless they are killed and can’t be resurrected. Since they’re raised from the dead by Light, they don’t age. • The Collapse is thought of as a process that concluded when the Traveler sacrificed itself to save us and created the Ghosts. Unless a whole bunch of Ghosts found their Guardians immediately there was a time when there weren’t Guardians, or weren’t enough of them, or they were finding their way around. During this time regular people stepped up as the protectors (these are the so-called “First Guardians,”) and once the Guardians began to get their bearings they traveled to the largest surviving settlement (under the Traveler) and you know the story from there: helped pilgrims, built walls, etc. Meanwhile the regular people serving as impromptu interim Guardians continued to serve, and some of the people who were raised under their protection in this early settlement chose to “enlist” when they got older. Eventually this practice dwindled over time, or maybe the Vanguard put a stop to it? Whatever. • The one being interviewed is known as “The First Guardian” because he was present at the first combat engagement of the Collapse, and the image of him standing up against an impossible fight with a Baron stuck in the minds of those present, and became a rallying story for others. By the time he is re-forged as a Guardian the people who actually saw it are older and he’s more story than real. He’s reluctant about his fame, and is glad it’s slipping into obscurity now, at least in the Tower if not in the City. • In my head, the First Guardian’s Ghost is a she, but I never had cause to denote that one way or another in the cards. (I know I’ve read somewhere in the Grimoire that Ghosts can be female, so I know it’s possible, but I can’t think where at the moment. I’ll update with links if I find them.)
