The net session that stamped 12-year-old Will Pucovski as a future star
Doug Patrick is a legendary recruiter in Victorian cricket but even he was unaware of emerging Australian star Will Pucovski when the then junior batsman was invited along to a training session with the Melbourne Cricket Club a decade ago.submitted by kabul67 to Cricket
While he had already made a name for himself at Hampton United Cricket Club, Melbourne officials recall the 12-year-old was known more at the time for being best mates with Sam Harper, now the Victoria and Melbourne Renegades wicketkeeper. The Harpers are a famous name at the Premier grade club, based at the picturesque Albert Ground in St Kilda.
Harper and Pucovksi became friends as young lads hanging around the change room when their fathers, Bryan and Jan, were attacking cricketers with Caulfield Park. Bryan is a legendary figure with Melbourne and Caulfield and his brother, Laurie, played 38 matches for Victoria through the 1990s. The fast-bowling Jan claimed more than 230 first XI wickets and played in three flags in the 1990s with Caulfield. He also represented Ringwood and Prahran.
At the recommendation of Bryan Harper, Pucovski was given a try-out. And what happened from the moment he had a net in front of Patrick and club great Robert Templeton has gone down in club folklore, and has set the scene for a potential Test debut against India next month.
"The boy was 12 or 13 at this stage. I should have known the name. We invited him down memorably to this first session of a group of youngsters coming through," Patrick says.
"I was watching Will and Robert Templeton was standing beside me. He looked at him for 10 or a dozen balls and said to me: 'That boy over there is the best that has ever been through.'
"I started watching Will for about 10 or 15 minutes and he was batting like he does now."
Australian stars Dean Jones, Brad Hodge and Andrew McDonald and Sheffield Shield great Warren Ayres are among those who have forged their reputations at the MCC. Yet when it came to establishing a junior academy two years ago to be largely run from the club's new facilities at Beaumaris Secondary College, there was one name that made so much sense. Even if he was only 20.
Pucovski's maturity for his age and ability to connect with teenagers stood out. Pucovski and his manager, James Henderson, were approached and later agreed to the not-for-profit program.
Club great Michael Sholly says: "We wanted to attach 15-year-olds with the academy. He is just one of the kids when he goes down there," said club great Michael Sholly. "Sometimes you don't want a 50-year-old bloke talking to them. You want a 20-year-old kid who sits with them and watches them bat and talks with them about similar things they are talking about."
Under Patrick's tutelage, the precocious Pucovski and Harper often played in carnivals against older boys.
Patrick says: "I think he is born to be a Test player rather than a limited-overs player. He might be a limited-overs-type player but he has such a gift for getting his balance right, his feet in the right place.''
He left teammates and opponents in awe after a knock in Swan Hill, including Brent Daniels, the Greater Western Sydney Giants AFL forward who was also an excellent junior cricketer.
"All Brent wanted to do was rave how good is Will Pucovski because he made a hundred that day hitting the ball along the ground, not playing whoopee big shots," Patrick says.
'HE HAS PLENTY OF SPUNK AND SPIRIT ABOUT HIM'
Pucovski is the only child of Jan and Jules Pucovski. Jan, the sports co-ordinator of St Leonard's College in Brighton East, can often be found completing laps with the family dog around the Albert Ground when Will is playing.
"In the early days, he was an only child and I was a phys-ed teacher, so I had a lot of time to throw tennis balls at him," Jan said in a radio interview last year.
Says Patrick: "He wasn't spoilt but he was very, very precious to his parents. They never molly-coddled him. He has plenty of spunk and spirit about him."
He debuted in Brighton Grammar's first XI as a year 8 student in 2011 and was appointed first XI captain and a school prefect in 2015.
Says Brighton Grammar sports director Tim Marshall: "From the moment he started in year 7, it was just his maturity around the other boys with the staff. He always had that amazing ability to speak equally to his peers and the staff.
"We have seen that even when he left school. He has come back and coached the little kids in cricket, gives his time where he can. He is just incredibly humble. He is a better person than cricketer and I think that says something considering his ability."
A TECHNIQUE FOR TESTS
Pucovski comes from the T20 generation but his game is more traditional. His balance and poise were already a feature at the national under-19 championships in 2016 when, as Vic Metro skipper, he thrashed a record 650 runs, including four centuries on the trot.
Greg Shipperd, a long-time coach of Victoria, a batting technician and now in charge of the Sydney Sixers, says Pucovski makes good decisions, has a "balanced" front foot game and a "beautiful" back foot technique.
"He has balance. He is compact and he is technically very sound. But more important than that is the clarity of his decision-making," Shipperd says.
On Pucovski's footwork, Shipperd says: "They are not big movements like Steve Smith but they are gliding movements and he plays, as I say, compact so he lets the ball come into his zone. He plays off both right leg and left leg equally as well. He has got choice about when he plays the ball and how close it is to his body.
"His pull shot is ever-improving but his cut shot and back-foot punches are as good as they get."
Pucovski was also a promising soccer player at Hampton Junior Soccer Club and a footballer with the Hampton Rovers and Brighton Grammar. Manchester United and Collingwood are two of his great loves.
Described by club officials as a robust midfielder, Pucovski was best suited up forward. In a team that was captained by Hamish Brayshaw, now with West Coast, he topped the club's goalkicking in under-15s, his last year, including a bag of 10 that helped the Rovers into a grand final.
HEAD KNOCKS AND MENTAL HEALTH
He has had eight concussions. The first and arguably most serious concussion came when training for football at Brighton Grammar he was tackled and flung into the knee of another player, striking the soft part of his temple. He was unable to play any sport for six months.
When he returned, the number of head knocks began to rise, some down to "dumb luck", as Pucovski put it. This included being struck by an errant ball while batting in an adjoining practice net at training. He even cracked his head on a door at home.
On the cusp of Test selection, he took a mental health break after he had become only one of nine players to post a Shield double century (243) before his 21st birthday, against Western Australia in October 2018. He returned to the crease and was selected for the Test series but returned home during the Canberra Test to deal with "challenges" at a time he was to have celebrated his 21st birthday.
Pucovski told selectors he wasn't ready for selection on the eve of last summer's campaign against Pakistan, conceding he had become "lazy" in maintaining his mental wellbeing standards. He has worked closely with mind coach Emma Murray, who has made him feel more comfortable at the elite level.
"I am meditating every morning, which I honestly never really believed in until (Murray) got me onto it and things like that have helped me turn things around," Pucovski says.
STAKING HIS CLAIM
Pucovski burst into Test calculations this summer with an unbeaten 255 against South Australia in Victoria's opening Sheffield Shield clash in Adelaide. In a new role as an opening batsman, he and Marcus Harris shared in a stand of 486, the highest partnership for any wicket in the competition's 128-year history, breaking a record set by the Waugh twins 30 years ago.
His claims became irresistible with a follow-up 202 against WA, joining some of the greats of the game to have consecutive first class centuries. In only 22 first-class matches, he now has six centuries, including three doubles.
A Test series against India, if Pucovski makes the team, will be a different beast. Those close to him expect the Indians to try to unsettle him. Selection chairman Trevor Hohns believes he can handle it.
"He certainly has the technique and, as I say, the game to handle the opening position, if required," Hohns says.
Need help discerning what kind of entity I’m dealing with (long read)
The death occurred in myself and my fiancé’s bedroom, sometime in 2000. The woman was not discovered for two weeks. We have a name, but the man that told us of her death has dementia and may have misremembered it, as I can’t find any info on the specific name that was given. We also don’t have a specific COD, but we suspect it may have been suicide.
Most of our activity comes from our bedroom closet, and I’ve had a few... less than savory experiences with the closet space. We’ve also had issues with our kitchen clocks (all battery operated) working for a week or so, and then stopping at 3:30am. Changing the batteries out doesn’t work. Resetting the clock doesn’t work. We’ve gone through 4 clocks with the same result each time, and the batteries always work after we take them out.
Back to the bedroom closet. Around early September of last year, I had a few mornings where I would wake up to find the closet door on the right side open about halfway (we have a walk-in with bi-fold doors). No big deal, we have cats so maybe one of them got closed in the night before and bonked themselves free, right? Wrong. My SIL went in our closet to borrow a windbreaker one day around that time, only to find that the closet doors wouldn’t open, no matter how hard she pulled on the doors.
This all culminated in one incident in mid-September of last year when I woke up from a terrifying dream only to be experiencing sleep paralysis. I had experienced it once prior when I was like 12 and tried my hand at astral projection, but it never happened again until this instance. We had gotten a kitten in July of last year and she was sleeping in between my fiancé and I, and as I was laying there paralyzed I heard the closet door open. I knew it wasn’t our other cat because we were keeping the kitten isolated in our room, as she was healing from getting spayed. As the door opened, I felt this overwhelming sense of dread and fear, almost like the atmosphere was suffocating me, but I couldn’t do anything about it because I couldn’t move. As it got closer, our kitten leapt up and stood on the edge of the bed in between myself and this presence and started hissing and spitting (totally out of character for her). At that point I was able to gasp loudly enough to get my fiancé to nudge me so I could break the paralysis.
I sat up, grabbed the kitten, and said “GO AWAY” in the strongest voice I could muster, and the presence disappeared. The following morning I went out and grabbed a bunch of things from our local witchy shop to purify the house. We put selenite wands over the doors, salted the doors and windows from the outside, placed protection sachets in each room, and said Psalm 91 as a family. Afterwards I banished the entity out of our unit, and it was holed up in the basement until recently. We were not able to smudge or burn incense because my MIL is on oxygen.
The basement activity was unpleasant, but at least we could escape from it. Activity down there ranged from lights turning on and off by themselves, the washer turning on in the middle of the night (which shakes our floors), and things being moved around in the middle of the night (which we can hear through the floor). The only oppressive presence was at the west end of the basement, which also happens to be directly beneath our bedroom and my SIL’s bedroom (who had also experienced closet-based activity).
For the past ~7 months, we were burdened with a different infestation, so we kind of just forgot about the entity. The building has allegedly been infested with bedbugs for at least 4 years (we’ve been here for just over a year) and we’ve had to deal with them head-on since March with a few months of rest in between infestations. Dealing with the bugs has been a living nightmare, and has allowed a LOT of negativity to seep into our daily lives. The treatments have also forced us to remove our protection from the door frames, walls, and windows, so we’ve effectively been unprotected for about 7 months.
Our most recent infestation has caused a lot of feelings of malcontent, resentment, and frustration and we’ve been very snippy with one another. We’ve effectively lost hundreds of dollars through having to trash our furniture and other belongings, on top of purchasing items to help with the treatments and laundry. Money is tight right now and we’re all not doing so well mentally. With all of this going on, and a lack of protection in the unit, it’s no surprise that this entity has set up shop in the closet again.
For three nights now, I’ve woken up to the closet door opening by itself. The first night I figured our cat SP (the kitten mentioned previously) had accidentally been shut in the closet and set herself free. The next night, both of the cats were on our bed and it happened again. This second night, I was just starting to doze off when I heard it, and as it registered in my brain I started to feel... stiff is really the only way I can describe it. Like, I could still move, but my body didn’t want to move. I fought the stiffness and got up to shut the door, whilst very firmly saying “No. Not again” out loud. Last night the washer turned on by itself and I heard a woman speaking, but it wasn’t the voice of anyone in this complex. The closet door was open when I rolled over in my sleep, but SP was sleeping in the closet so I felt safe leaving it open.
The first night, my SIL was woken by an acrylic pumpkin falling off of a decorative broom that she had made last month. She had rubber cemented the pumpkin on the broom herself, and I remember her being surprised with how well it had stuck. She started praying Psalm 91 and shortly thereafter we went out for a cigarette. I went in before her, and she told me the basement light came on by itself again and she heard someone moving our table (a heavy, wrought iron coffee table) against the wall, but when she looked, no one was down there and the light was off. She got up as soon as she had heard the noise, and the basement has only one exit.
Around 2am I was startled (again, dozing off) by the sound of a chorus of coyotes outside our apartment. Coyotes are common in our state, but we rarely get a sighting in our town since it’s so densely populated. Anyways, I also feed the local stray cats, so my mind immediately went to one of the cats potentially being hunted. I ran outside and said something to my SIL about coyotes being outside, and started walking along the property where the heavy brush is to see if I could see them. The sound got more intense as I walked around, so I got in my car and drive around the block to the old mill to see if they were over there.
I have no idea why my mind decided that was a good idea, but as soon as I left the property, they stopped. There was absolutely no noise other than the occasional cricket, and a rabbit passed by my car as I was driving. A rabbit wouldn’t be outside in the open if a horde of coyotes were just in the area. I drove home, and as soon as I got back on the property, two strays were eating at the food bowl. My SIL came outside to ask me what the hell I was doing, and she said she didn’t hear the coyotes at all.
I have no idea what to think of any of this, but we’re smudging the house within the week. Probably on the New Moon. We were told to contact a priest by a Paranormal Investigator, but with COVID our local diocese isn’t doing house blessings. I also purchased some new protection items and did a mini-protection blessing last night.
