[US][H]US and Import games, NES, SNES, Switch, PS4, Sega, B3G1 ALL GAMES $10 OR LESS! [W]Paypal (Fundraising for our indie JRPG)

My name is Ben, I'm the lead dev and founder at an indie game dev company called Heartstrings Studios, and we need a bit of funds for our game "Witch". We're currently about to make some huge steps that will need some extra financial backing so I've decided to clear out about 95% of my game collection. Sacrifice one love to fund another. As well, we're about to do a major demo at Dreamhack Dallas this weekend and it'd be nice to take a bit of extra cash and treat the devs to a bit of a celebration.
For those interested you can check out the game here:
So I picked only the most important things to set aside and decided to sell everything else. I'll be adding consoles, both US and Japanese, over the next few days as well.
Shipping is free over $30, add $4 for anything under that. Anything purchased before Thursday will be shipped on the same day of purchase if available, otherwise I'll ship as I can from Thursday to Sunday because we'll be at Dreamhack. I will update this list as things sell.
IF YOU WANT TO BUY ME OUT COMPLETELY, CONTACT ME AND I WILL OFFER A DISCOUNTED BULK PRICE!
In honor of us having our first major demo at Dreamhack I'll also do Buy 3 Get 1 Free on any game, US or Japanese, that's $10 or under. Thank you for supporting us!

The Losers of the Red Bull Junior Team - /r/Formula1 Editorial Team

The Losers of the Red Bull Junior Team -- Part 1: The Early Years (2001-2004)

by TheStateOfIt

THE RED BULL JUNIOR TEAM PRODUCES LOSERS

In this world, there are only so many winners.
It is inherently unequal. The winners have to be the select few. Nobody can be the pick of the litter if there is no litter to compare it to. Every class has its valedictorian, but everyone else is just... 'normal'. Some may win scholarships, but they're not the ones making the fancy graduation speech.
The Red Bull Junior Team claims to be this cream of the crop. They're the school of the four-time World Champion. The breeding ground for young record breakers and eternally happy Australians. Join Marko, and you're not only guaranteed a spot on the dance floor, but you'll become the prom king (or queen/gender-neutral royalty).
However, life's not all that beautiful for Marko's men and women. For every Vettel and Verstappen, you have Kvyat and Gasly. For every Gasly and Kvyat, you have Alguersuari and Klien. For every Klien and Alguersuari, you have Friesacher an-- well you get the picture.
It's no secret Marko is merciless. But for the case of all the above, they can all claim to have MADE IT to Formula One. At least you know their names. There are plenty of other drivers that have been seduced by Helmut's promises. And most of them end up with nothing but a mention on the saddest Wikipedia section.
The Red Bull Junior Team has only so many winners. By crude definition and harsh usage of the word, the rest are all losers.
It’s time to focus on the losers.

Finding out the Losers

Obviously, to pick losers there has to be some benchmark to see who ‘lost’ and who didn’t. More precisely, who did Marko’s system leave behind and who benefited from it.
Fairly obviously, all Formula One drivers that originated from Red Bull’s Junior Team are considered successes. No matter how they made it, they still made it. This includes those like Patrick Friesacher, who got kicked out of Red Bull before making it to Formula One. Lucky son of a bitch. Even Narain Karthikeyan gets himself a pass here.
However, there are plenty of other drivers with notable success that hailed from Red Bull Juniors. Just not in Formula One. I can’t deny Neel Jani’s victory in Le Mans and A1GP crown despite being stuck in test driver purgatory under Marko. Nor can I oversee Indycar talents like Robert Wickens or even Mikhail Aleshin.
Honestly, I tried to come up with some criteria to see who survived with a respectable racing career after life with Marko, but honestly it was a bit frustrating. Eventually, I narrowed it down to ’those that I subjectively deem okay enough in the motorsport world’. Enjoy this cherry-picking while y’all still can, folks. If you did enjoy my cherry-picking, please pen down a positive review and mail it to Marina Bay Street Circuit, Singapore. I may pick it up once quarantine is over.
So, apart from the aforementioned, I’ll give a pass to three-time Porsche Supercup champion Michael Ammermuller, Daytona 24 Hours winners Philipp Eng, Memo Rojas and Antonio Garcia, TCR Series champion J.K. Vernay, A1GP race winner Adrian Zaugg, Stock Car Brasil champion Ricardo Mauricio, Formula E race winner Antonio Felix da Costa and the most surprising Race of Champions Champion ever Championed, Felipe Albuquerque.
Also excluded are those that still have a precious, feeble thing called hope. Hope didn’t get me a boyfriend, girlfriend or scholarship, and likewise it may never get these guys a chance at Formula One. However, that opportunity is still there for them, be it for F1 or some other, highly regarded racing series.
All present Junior Team drivers thus have hope, as well as evicted members with some standing in lower formulae. These are the likes of Macau Grand Prix winner Richard Verschoor, Aussie F4 champion Luis Leeds, the most Irish Mexican Pato O’Ward, Lucas Auer, F2 driver Callum Illott, F3 driver Niko Kari, Harry Thompson, GP3 champion Alex Lynn, Neil Verhagen and some entitled, ramming-under-safety-car, baseless-accusation-making prick whose name rhymes with Tan Dickdumb. Hope for some may be running out, especially Kari and Lynn, who were inches from being considered losers in my book, but I still gave them a pass.
Now that I got that out of my system, let’s run through the losers. Again, this definition of ‘loser’ is quite unfair, given the nature of motorsport. But that’s just motorsport. Unfair. Anyone that doesn’t end up among the elite are shoved aside. These are those people.

The Early Years (2001-2004)

These are all drivers that were taken in at the start of Marko’s adventure with the Austrian drinks company that adapted a Thai recipe. Their initial intake consists of a decent chunk of Austrian drivers, seemingly to find the next Niki Lauda at best or the next Harald Ertl at worst, spawning drivers like Christian Klien and Patrick Friesacher.
Also starting in those early years was the Red Bull Driver Search, their venture to find the next American to crack into Formula One’s ranks, so quite a few Americans belong in this list as well.
Oh, and a wild Sebastian Vettel was also part of Red Bull’s initial Junior line-up, but we’re focusing on the ‘losers’, remember?
Bernhard Auinger (AUT) -- 2001-2003 -- Formula Three/Formula 3000
To clear the air to all residents of Salzburg, this guy is NOT your vice-mayor.
Instead, this Bernhard Auinger, also a Salzburg resident, had a ridiculously low-profile racing career, with a meh 15th in the F3 Euroseries being his biggest highlight with Red Bull Junior. A race win at Euro F3000 the following year and claiming the 2009 Suzuki Championship, however unimportant that championship is, was pretty much the swansong of his racing career.
He is still under Red Bull’s employ though, serving as a driving instructor in the Red Bull Ring.
Reinhard Kofler (AUT) -- 2001-2004 -- Formula BMW/Formula Renault 2.0
Kofler’s initial promise with Red Bull after winning Formula BMW Junior in 2001 failed to show in following seasons in German and European Formula Renault 2.0. Despite race-winning seasons in ‘03 and ‘04, including one in the Masters series in Donington ahead of some Maldonado dude, he was never TOP of the pack. And if you’re not first in Marko’s eye, you’re history, like Marko’s other eye.
He’s still carving out a career in motorsport, being a dangerously loyal driver to KTM. Seriously, being there for ten years, it’s like he’s married to that thing. Still brings him results with race wins in GT4, but if KTM ever goes under, I’m putting him on a watchlist for separation anxiety.
Christopher Wassermann (AUT) -- 2001-2004 -- Karting/Formula BMW
He was Sebastian Vettel’s yardstick. They followed the exact same path for their first four years with Red Bull: two years of karting, two years in Formula BMW ADAC. You know how the story goes for Vettel. 4x World Champion, Hamilton’s humble rival, all that. Wassermann took the road more commonly travelled: into ”Who the fuck is he?-ville”.
As Seb scored 18 wins in his second year in Formula BMW, Wassermann could only squeak by with two podiums. For reasons that are very easy to understand, Red Bull let the man of water go. However, unlike other members of the class of 2001, Wassermann seemed to drop out of motorsport altogether. Two half-hearted, half-talented appearances in British and German F3 was all he managed in 2005. He made a cameo in a Singaporean magazine in 2008 as a Formula BMW instructor. He’s been out of motorsport since. At least, I think so, given how his Facebook profile picture changed from a racing car to an Austrian landscape back in 2014...
...what? It’s not stalking if it’s research. Right?
Martin Ragginger (AUT) -- 2002-2006 -- Karting/Formula BMW
Ragginger was ditched rather unceremoniously by Red Bull in 2006 after some positive, if not above-average results in Formula BMW, which, as we’ve come to know, is a big no-no for the big Red Bull. However, there’s no shame in Ragginger’s current career, having won the Spa 24 hours in 2010, so fair credit to him. However, his latest career resume is almost laughable.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is so distinctly uninteresting, it’s run in the day in Singapore’s night race. Yet it should be celebrated just to follow the storyline that Ragginger has carved for himself in that series. Over the past seven seasons, he has placed runner-up in the championship four times. He’s the ultimate underdog. He’ll never win, but he’ll sure try.
Paul Edwards (USA) -- 2003 -- World Series by Nissan
He may have joined the Red Bull Junior team, but he was by no means ‘junior’. He was already twenty-five. He also won both the Formula Europa Cup and the Formula Palmer Audi Winter Series, ahead of other future F1 drivers like Takuma Sato and Giorgio Pantano, a full three years before he joined Red Bull under their driver search programme. So what gives?
Well, it’s down to the Red Bull Driver Search. Enjoy that website in all its 2005 glory while it lasts. It was Red Bull’s very own, curated programme to find the next American F1 driver. There’s enough juicy content out there on the internet for anybody to rip into. From contracts that were “examples of athlete slavery” to an absolute farce of a driver evaluation, there’s plenty in those articles to feast your eyes upon. But at the end of that first test, Edwards was hand-picked as the experienced face of the bunch.
His career with Red Bull was abysmal, though. A single season in the World Series by Nissan with no wins and podiums, and he was shipped right back to the United States. He didn’t prove to be that bad back in the States, even winning the Grand-Am Championship in 2008, but compared to peers in Red Bull, his career was averagely average and retired in 2012 to work with Jaguar as a driver coach.
Grant Maiman (USA) -- 2003 -- Formula Renault 2.0
In all fairness to Maiman, the decision to take him on into Red Bull was mystifying. The same age as Edwards but with none of the experience, with just a single Formula Dodge title to his name. One failed go at German Formula Renault, and he took the Wassermann route, straight out of the driver’s seat. He made, and continues to make, a few appearances in Grand-Am and sportscars whenever he chooses, but for now, he’s settling down as, you guessed it, a driver coach.
Jeez, I thought they’d all have exciting post-motorsport jobs like Bobby Dornboos, but everyone here is dry, stale bread. Expand your horizons, people.
Moving on.
Joel Nelson (USA) -- 2003 -- Formula 3000/Formula 3
The first thing he did as a Red Bull driver was beat Fernando Alonso’s F3000 lap record around Jerez.
Okay, gotcha there. He was using the 2003-spec F3000 car, which was way more powerful than Alonso’s machine. His outing in Euro 3000 that year wasn’t fun for him, retiring more times than Terry Funk in races. Unlike fellow Statesiders Maiman and Edwards, though, he didn’t embarrass himself pace-wise. Two podiums and a pole position should’ve been a good base to build from.
And then he disappeared. There’s taking the Wassermann route, and then there’s completely fucking off from everything ever. Most recent thing I found searching for “Joel Nelson racing” on social media was this. I highly doubt that’s the same Joel Nelson I’m talking about right now.
Mathias Lauda (AUT) -- 2003-2004 -- World Series Lights/Formula 3000
Yes, son of that Lauda. However, he unfortunately belongs among the pool of ’losers’. Not his fault. Poor lad didn’t even get a chance in karting before being thrown into single-seaters in 2002. No surprise, when he was chucked into F3000 in 2004, he was mired in the lower midfield before being cut by Red Bull. Since then, he’s been mostly lower-midfield everywhere. GP2, A1GP, DTM, Porsche Supercup, you name it, Mathias has meh’d in it. Only exceptions being Le Mans and NASCAR. Granted, his Le Mans successes came in a class with only five entries, but I’ll allow him to celebrate that success, no judgement here.
And yes, I said NASCAR. No, not Sprint Cup, but in the infinitely better NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, where he is a proven race winner. His stock car success also briefly stretched into the unicorn in motorsport wildlife known as the Speedcar Series. All this begs now is for the younger Lauda to find his true calling, enter the Cup series and win the Daytona 500. I can dream, but this is a dream worth dreaming.
Also, sidenote, I found a photo of Mathias modelling. I don’t know if it’s NSFW. Certainly, no naughty bits waist-down are shown. But, to anybody that, like me, prefers males, heed this warning: it’s seriously arousing.
Norbert Siedler (AUT) -- 2003-2004 -- World Series by Nissan/Euro Formula 3000
Siedler was one of those that actually had a decent junior career under Red Bull, finishing 3rd in Euro 3000 in 2004. However, Marko being Marko, a third place in a second-tier series to a second-tier series somehow wasn’t enough. Undeterred, he became co-champion in the 3000 Pro Series the year after, almost instantly before the entire racing world decided it was a series completely inconsequential and irrelevant in the motorsport world.
He did get a brief taste of F1 as one of Minardi’s millions of test drivers, but now he’s settled as a grizzled Porsche Supercup veteran and a competitive GT racer, finishing second in last year’s International GT Open.
Dominique Claessens IX (USA) -- 2004 -- Formula Renault 2.0
Okay, yeah, failed Red Bull Driver Search winner, midfield runner in German Formula Renault WHO CARES. Literally everything I see surrounding this dude is unique as fuck. He gave up motorsport right after his Red Bull contract and is now a certified drone pilot and photographer..
That suffix to his name is not something to make him look cool, IT’S REAL. His family literally had eight ancestors named Dominique before him. His dad apparently produced a game called “Yearn2Learn: Peanuts”, based on the Charles Schulz comic strip. And lastly, there are apparently four patents in his name, all for consuming (presumably alcoholic) beverages.
Screw winning four Formula One championships, I want his life.
Matt Jaskol (USA) -- 2004 -- Formula BMW
Jesus, compared to the previous group, 2004’s Red Bull Driver Search winners really loved life. Jaskol actually performed well with Red Bull backing in Formula BMW, finishing in 4th for the season, but fell out of their Junior team the following year for reasons unknown. Cameos in Indy Lights and Star Mazda went nowhere. With no racing career left on the cards, Jaskol threw himself out of a moving vehicle.
Multiple times. Because he took up skydiving. It’s not how most people unwind from a racing career, though I guess getting treatment from Dr. Marko would want to make you toss yourself off of a high place. But for Jaskol, this was just his average, non-famous job, shying away from the spotlight.
Actually, did I say “shy away from the spotlight”? Because he did the complete opposite. In 2018, he became a contestant on a forgettable, single-season reality television show, Castaways). In the most Survivory-style ripoff, where people are left stranded on an Indonesian island - NOT Bali - for as long as they can, he made it all the way until the end of the show, becoming one of five winners. The final still of the finale said “Matt decided to give racing one last shot. He plans to race in the Indianapolis 500 next year.”
I won’t spoil the ending, so I’ll let you check the 2019 Indy 500 entry list for yourself.
Atte Mustonen (FIN) -- 2004 -- Karting
Sorry that I just killed your eyes if you tried to look at that photo, but it’s the only pic of Mustonen with Red Bull I could find. He was picked as a Finnish karting phenom, the next Raikkonen, if you will. WHY Marko and co. dropped Mustonen at 16 after a single season of karting is beyond me. Still, Mustonen performed well enough in junior formulae to earn a seat with Raikkonen’s own British F3 team in 2007.
Yes, fun fact, Kimi Raikkonen had a Formula 3 team, and in true Kimi fashion (partially because he was busy winning the World Championship), left his managers to handle the reigns. Under his compatriot’s guidance, Mustonen was able to perform to a distinctly average level. This was enough to get boosted to European F3 the following season. However, on the big stage, next to Jules Bianchi, Valtteri Bottas, Alexander Sims, Sam Bird and other grand names, he flopped hard and scored just four points.
And just like that, one of Finland’s most promising karting talents was gone in a flash.
Colin Fleming (USA) -- 2004-2006 -- Formula Renault 2.0/Formula Renault 3.5
Colin Fleming has staying power. What I mean by that is that he was the only driver in Red Bull’s 2004 driver search to last with them for more than a season. He performed well enough in Formula Renault 2.0 to be boosted up to Formula Renault 3.5 for 2005, and performed decently enough to get a second bite of the cherry for 2006.
Then this one dude called Vettel came along and bumped Fleming out of the team, out of Red Bull’s driver programme and out of motorsport entirely. Fleming is far more successful, though, in his current role as a Senior Vice-President at Salesforce, a global software company. Seriously, check out his LinkedIn page. It contains the most synergistically dynamic summation of a venture into automobile competition tailored for relevant stakeholders ever procured.
Also, last of all, it is compulsory to check out this video. As you’re watching it, remember that those two guys are a former Formula One driver and the Senior VP of a Fortune 500 company.
If this last bit here is a time to give credits, I’d like to thank Jon Bois and his Loser Machine and Bob Emergency videos for rough inspiration. Everyone has a story, and not just the successful and the celebrated. There’s so many people in motorsport that don’t “win”. Their stories deserve some mention too.
And also credits to driverDB for being surprisingly comprehensive-ish. And Red Bull, for trying to get drivers into F1. And my mom and dad for birthing me. And you guys for reading this. :--).
That’s about it for Part One. Yep, there’s three more parts to go, for four juicy posts on the whereabouts of the ‘losers’ of Red Bull Junior Team. In the next part is a Hong Kong resident under constant scrutiny from the police (for non-riot related reasons), a Monegasque who blew his Mone-gasket and a disappearing Finn.
